You are able to eat like you’ve always wanted to and easily stop when you’re full. Your clothes fit and you are happy with your body when you look in the mirror. You don’t always eat perfectly, but you are kind to yourself. You are not obsessively calculating what to eat, planning what to eat or beating yourself up over what you shouldn't have eaten. You are happy to leave the house and go out in the evenings. You feel good about yourself and enjoying spending time with people you care about.

20 Years Ago, I Experienced The Lowest Point In My Life.
I was a student at Oxford University and I was at the mercy of these cravings that had overtaken my life. I just had to get through finals exams and “then I’d find the solution”. In the meantime binging and purging was just part of everyday life. I spent hundreds of dollars each week on food for just myself. I threw up at least once a day.
I pretended everything was great, I partied a few times a week, hiding my deep secret.
But it wasn’t new to me. I started at around 15. I smoked 2 packs of cigarettes a day for weight loss. I was desperate to be thin and to curb my compulsion, I’d smoke. I would wake up and have a cigarette and coffee first thing in the morning.
I just kept trying to eat “normally” and stop throwing up. But my eating “normally” was actually restricting. I was trying to eat very little and then the cravings and compulsion would take over and I’d feel I’d eaten too much and so it was all messed up anyway – and then I’d go on a huge binge and throw up. At its worst it was happening about 4 times a day. As in whole parts of the day dedicated to eating and throwing up.
And I would RAGE at people when they interrupted me. I remember my mom and sister walking into my room when I was in my early teens and binging. I was trying to hide all the wrappers and food and raging at them – telling them to leave me alone, stop coming in, trying to keep my secret hidden.
I went to rehab at age 19 and stayed for 2 weeks during the Christmas holiday. I was AMAZED I could actually eat 3 normal meals a day and not put on weight. I thought “I’ve got this” and I refused to stay, telling my mom it was a cult. When I got back to regular life I promptly relapsed. It was totally isolating.
I Convinced Everybody That I Was Fine.
When I turned 21 I began working with a therapist combined with 12-step recovery. During the 5 years of support, I still always felt I was running from things. Like I had this huge ocean of feelings that made me want to eat. I could “manage” this pain at best but I didn’t feel healed. It took so much energy to manage it. There’s a distinction between healing something at the source, where it disappears entirely and managing it, which dominates your life. I knew I had to stop the cycle somehow, that’s when I started becoming interested in psychology and hypnotherapy as a career.
I’m happy to say that I was able to figure it out. And I’ve taken what I learned and have shared it to help many, many others internationally. The key to the process is you have to be willing to go deep. Your cravings and compulsions ARE the road to wholeness. They are an invitation to feel.
I’ve known people that, without the proper background, tried to figure it out on their own.It’s so tempting to think you will be able to figure this out on your own, but one year can become 5 years and then ten years and beyond. That is what usually ends up happening to people. It is heartbreaking to know so many people are suffering, especially when there is a way out.
